The Annual 4x4 awards set out to recognise and reward the companies, cars & technologies that are ensuring 4x4's cast off their dirty past and take a more environmentally-friendly path.
Jeep have completely turned around their models' fuel consumption, and they've done it with nothing more than diesel engines.
It is a handy correlation that as carbon dioxide emissions come down, mpg must always go up, and this is something that Jeep with their hugely expanded range of models have seized upon for their European markets. They have even ditched some petrol-engined models completely.
The diesels routinely add 10 miles on every gallon over old-generation Jeeps, as well as bringing CO2 emissions doen from the stratosphere.
The New Compass & Patriot diesels are the most economical 4x4's ever to wear the Jeep badge. They are also the least polluting with CO2 that brings them in under the top level for tax.
It's taken them half a century, but Jeep have even put a diesel engine in the Wrangler for the first time. It's not only far more economical than the old petrol model, it is almost as fast and a lot torquier.
The mpg has increased fir all the modles as you can see blow:
The fact is that the diesel works well and delivers the mpg the official figures say it should.
