Techies 2011 - Best Car Safety System: Ford Focus Driver Assistance Pack

Sourced: BusinessCar.co.uk

When the new Ford Focus was launched earlier this year, on offer with the new product was a package of safety systems Ford combined as the Driver Assistance Pack.

For a range of safety systems brought together as one option, normally a price well into four figures would be expected, but Ford priced it all at just £750, or as it points out, 68p per day over three years.

For that, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, driver fatigue alert, blind spot monitor, traffic sign recognition, auto high beam assist and low speed safety systems are all fitted to the car. That’s a big tick next to the box marked Duty of Care.

The most useful of those are possibly the low speed safety system, which prevents or mitigates accidents in urban areas, and the driver alert, which monitors driver behavior, and sounds an alert if it senses that the driver is tiring. The traffic sign recognition system reads speed signs as you pass, and will flash up a warning if the driver is exceeding the limit by a pre-set amount. But the entire package, for the money, is an impressive achievement, and has led to a well-deserved victory in the 2011 Techies.

Please see below details of justsome of the new technologies available on the New Focus, some of which are included in the Driver Assistance Pack
Torque Vectoring Control
Reacts to the road 100 times per second. The system then uses this information to repeatedly balance the amount of power between the two front wheels.
Lane Departure Warning
Alerts you before you drift out of lane by vibrating your steering wheel. The level of vibration can be adjusted to three levels of sensitivity and a visual alert pops up on your driver information cluster.

Traffic Sign Recognition
The new Focus features Traffic Sign Recognition technology. The system identifies traffic and speed signs and displays the information on your instrument cluster.

Active Park Assist - The new Focus has Active Park Assist, which is clever technology that first checks if a parking space is big enough then automatically steers you in.

Low Speed Safety System
This is designed to assist you in slow moving traffic at speeds under 20mph. If the system's sensors detect the car in front has unexpectedly stopped, it brakes automatically.

EcoBoost
This engine is lighter and more compact, as well as directly and more efficiently injecting fuel into each cylinder. So you use less fuel and produce lower CO2 emissions, while enjoying the performance of a larger engine.
