EV = Electric Vehicle, meaning a vehicle powered entirely or partially by electricity stored in batteries rather than petrol or diesel.

Do EVs pay road tax?

Yes. From 1 April 2025, electric vehicles are no longer exempt from UK Vehicle Excise Duty (VED).

  • New EVs registered on/after 1 April 2025: £10 first‑year rate, then £195 annually.
  • EVs registered 2017–2025: Standard £195 annual rate.
  • EVs registered 2001–2017: £20 annual rate.
  • Expensive Car Supplement: Applies if list price exceeds £40k (rising to £50k in 2026) adding £425/year for years 2–6.

How will EV mileage tax work? (eVED from 2028)

A new pay‑per‑mile tax (eVED) begins April 2028.

  • Rate: 3p per mile for EVs; 1.5p per mile for plug‑in hybrids.
  • No GPS tracking — mileage verified using MOT odometer readings.

Drivers estimate annual mileage, pay upfront, then reconcile at year‑end (refunds/extra charges given).

How do EV chargers work?

EV chargers supply electricity to the car’s battery via AC or DC power.

  • Home/slow chargers (AC): Convert AC to DC inside the car, slower speeds.
  • Rapid/ultra‑rapid chargers (DC): Convert AC to DC in the charger, sending DC directly to the battery for fast charging.

A good app to use to locate your nearest public charging point, is Zapmap. This will allow you to search by location and find the nearest chargers to you, including rapid or high power charging stations.

What is the EV mandate (ZEV mandate)?

A UK law requiring increasing percentages of manufacturers’ new car sales to be zero‑emission vehicles.

  • Started 3 January 2024.
  • Manufacturers must meet rising sales targets:
    • 2024: 22%,
    • 2030: 80%,

2035: 100% zero‑emission for cars and vans.

Are EVs exempt from the congestion charge?

  • The Cleaner Vehicle Discount ended 25 December 2025.
  • Most EVs must now pay the congestion charge (£18/day from 2026).

EVs are still exempt from ULEZ, which is a separate scheme.

Yes, EV tariffs are generally worth it if you charge your electric vehicle at home, offering 30-70% lower rates overnight compared to standard tariffs. By switching, you can save hundreds of pounds annually, with off-peak rates often available for 5-6 hours, allowing you to charge for as little as 7.5p-8.5p/kWh.

What is the difference between all of the different charging points?

When it comes to a public charging point, there are typically three different types of connection; CCS, CHADEMO & Type 2. The latter is usually limited to a 22kW speed and you'll need to use your own. Each charging station you come across will be managed by different companies. Usually they'll have their own smartphone apps where you can register for an account, ensuring a smooth process when charging publicly. The Zapmap app will display the company that owns the charging point.

How long can I wait to charge my vehicle after the warning light comes on?

Like their petrol and diesel counterparts, electric vehicles have a warning light when you're running low on electric. Whilst the remaining range differs between cars after the warning light comes on, it's best not to let your car get below 10%.​

Is it true you can't travel long distances in an electric vehicle?

Absolutely not. As long as you plan your journey and you know the range of your vehicle, you can decide which public charging points you'll visit along the way.

Can I tow with my electric vehicle?

Yes you can. There is no reason an EV can't be a proper towing vehicle if it has sufficient power and the components that can handle the added load. You can speak to our Electric Specialists for more information.

Is it cheaper to own an electric vehicle than a petrol or diesel?

Whilst the initial investment of owning an electric vehicle is higher, overall you'll pay less. when compared to petrol or diesel engines, electric vehicles have less moving parts which in turn means there is less that could go wrong. There's also no need to top up any oil, for example.

Can I choose a manual option for my electric vehicle?

All EVs are automatic. EVs are power-efficient throughout their revs, unlike fuel engines which have a narrow rev band in which they can deliver maximum performance. EVs need only one gear. No gearbox means even basic EVs are speedy from a standstill and accelerate smoothly and continuously.

How are EVs better for the environment?

Electric vehicles emit less greenhouse gases over their lifetime than conventional engines, making EVs better for the environment. This is even when you consider the energy needed to manufacture and power them.
