Drivers Urged to Act Now Before New EV Tax Arrives in 2028

The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves, has confirmed in the Budget that a new taxation scheme for electric vehicles will come into effect from April 2028. The move introduces an Electric Vehicle Excise Duty, designed to ensure all drivers contribute fairly to road maintenance.

Under the scheme, battery electric cars will incur a charge of 3p per mile, while plug-in hybrids will pay 1.5p per mile, with rates rising annually in line with inflation. This will be payable alongside existing Vehicle Excise Duty (VED).

Reeves explained:
“Because all cars contribute to the wear and tear on our roads, I will ensure drivers are taxed according to how much they drive, and not just by the type of car they own.”
